what’s the real advantage to buy glasses online?
27 October 2008Found this group earlier this week, after having an “incident” with my old glasses, which I’d had for… geez… 10 years! anyway, I needed new ones. I still had my old prescription so I ordered a pair from Zenni right away. Figured I was due for a checkup since the last one I’d had was over five years ago. Did it last night and bought a pair of Silhouettes from the B&M store while I was there. The price was high but I figure I’d let them have *one* pair and then order some new sunglasses, backups, etc. online.
Here’s the kicker - there is NO store in my area that does “while you wait” glasses. The quickest turnaround I got after calling around was 3 days, so I didn’t see any point whatsoever in going to a mall chain.
At this point, I don’t know if the Glasses Shop I ordered earlier or my new Silhouettes will come in first. We’ll see! (and hopefully I will, too - working in the office with my Ray-Bans on is getting old, and my coworkers probably think I’m trying to channel Johnny Cash.)
Since I’ve found the world of online prescription glasses, I am thinking of an idea… I’m a pretty vintage-styled kind of person (my watch is vintage, my car is vintage, etc. etc. etc.) I figured I might take a chance on a lot of vintage frames off eBay or something, pick out a pair of brow lines or horn rims that actually fit me, and send them off to be relensed to my prescription. That way I’d have a pair of cool looking sunglasses for significantly less money than a new pair from the B&M store and they’d be the real deal. Has anyone done this, and how did it work out for you? Does any online relensing service offer a polarized lens? I’m really sold on polarized lenses for driving in bright sun and/or snow.

30 September 2008The most important development in glass music came when, in 1761, young Benjamin Franklin heard a recital by glass virtuoso Edmund Delaval. Franklin was so impressed by the instrument that he looked for a way to improve it. As he wrote to his friend, Giovanni Battista Beccaria, in Italy:
“Being charmed by the sweetness of its tones, and the music he produced from it, I wished only to see the glasses disposed in a more convenient form, and brought together in a narrower compass, so as to admit a greater number of tones, and all within reach of hand to a person sitting before the instrument (…)”
Franklin chose 24 glass bowls, had them tuned by grinding, and mounted them concentrically on a horizontal rod. Driven by a treadle (very much like an old-fashioned sewing machine), the glasses spun around, and the player had only to touch the glasses with wet fingers.
Franklin called the instrument the “armonica”, “in honor of your (i.e. the Italian) musical language”.
